Dessau-Roßlau Bauhaus.Elbe.GardenKingdom

The twin town of Dessau-Roßlau lies 35 km from Wittenberg at the seams of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Middle Elbe, nested into the riverscape of the Mulde River and the Elbe with their lush forests and meadows. Dessau-Wörlitz is home to three more UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Bauhaus, Masters’ Houses, and the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz. Thus, the town and its surroundings leave nothing to be desired for culture and nature enthusiasts.

Under the rule of Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau, the city became a center of Enlightenment. In the 18th century, he created the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz with its unique castles and parks. With the establishment of the Bauhaus, the school of design which was opened by Walter Gropius in 1926, Dessau became known as the capital of modernism. Famous artists like Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Lyonel Feininger worked here, and the composer Kurt Weill, the poet Wilhem Müller, and the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn were born in Dessau, the town in which Hugo Junkers made history in the technical realm in the 20th century.
While Dessau built up a reputation as Bauhaus city, Roßlau was known as a shipping town. The water castle and classicist buildings by the architect Bandhauer are among the most famous buildings in Roßlau.
The town’s treasures of museums and galleries, the great program of the Anhaltische Theater Dessau, and countless recreational activities are up for discovery.
The density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in and around Dessau-Roßlau is unique. For example, wide stretches of the Elbe and Mulde were brought under UNESCO conservative protection in the Biosphere Reserve Middle Elbe in 1979; in 1996, the Bauhaus sites in Weimar and Dessau have been brought under the umbrella of the UNESCO World Heritage program; and since 2000, the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz ranks among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Additionally, the nearby town of Wittenberg is home of the Luther Memorials which have been recognized as cultural heritage of humanity in 1996 and ever since belong to UNESCO World Heritage.
