Oranienbaum A little piece of Holland

The small town of Oranienbaum, just 13 km east of the Bauhaus city of Dessau, is situated in the Biosphere Reserve Middle Elbe. An originally inconspicuous spot of land in Anhalt, Countess Henriette Catharina of Orange-Nassau turned it into what it is up till today: A unique gem of Dutch Baroque architecture in the middle of Germany, showcasing a wonderful ensemble of town, palace, and park.

Up until now, mention of the name “Oranienbaum” evokes the House of Orange which gave important new impetus to the principality of Anhalt-Dessau regarding economy and culture. Countess Henriette Catharina (1637-1708), wife of Prince John George II of Anhalt-Dessau (1627-1693), contributed significantly to the remarkable architectural development of the formerly inconspicuous place.
The princess from the House of Orange-Nassau not only named the place in reference to her family, but bestowed the Dutch character on the palace. Typical for the town center is the rectangular street network with its visual axes. On the square market place is the town’s landmark, the Orange tree.
The town of Oranienbaum, which was merged with the member municipalities of the former administration “Wörlitzer Winkel” in 2011 to form the city of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz, is part of the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz and, accordingly, under UNESCO protection. In the 18th century, the formerly baroque island garden was transformed into the only English-Chinoise garden which survived from that century up to today, and is an important element in the style variety of the Garden Kingdom.
We are looking forward to your visit!
