Situated in the Biosphere Reserve Middle Elbe only about 10 km beeline from Lutherstadt Wittenberg, the lovely little town of Wörlitz is looking back on a history of more than 1000 years. In the second half of the 18th century it became famous for one of the first and most beautiful English landscape parks of continental Europe. The town is in the immediate vicinity of the heart of the UNESCO protected Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz.

"Wörlitz is not a local affair, not even a German one; it is an affair of European scale, a world affair, really", as Wilhelm van Kempen emphatically said at the beginning of the 20th century.
The town of Wörlitz, part of the city of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz, was once called the Venice of Anhalt, and it became a center of attraction for travelers in search of recreation, inspiration, and education as early as the 18th and 19th century. The first authentic mention of Wörlitz dates to the early Middle Ages, to the year 1004. Some elements of the present Saint Petri Church still are evocative of the time when a place of worship – of extraordinary dimensions compared to the size of the settlement - had been established in the Romanesque style. The meadow landscape as hunting ground was of great importance to the princes of Dessau. Originally, a royal hunting lodge stood where the Wörlitz Palace stands today. Several half-timbered houses dating back to the first half of the 18th century have been preserved in the town (Kirchgasse, Förstergasse, Ermannsdorffstraße). And so up till today, Wörlitz offers everything for a relaxing and inspiring stay.
