The Travel Destination Saxony-Anhalt Podcast
Every month, Destination Saxony-Anhalt publishes an interview with a person who lives and works in Saxony-Anhalt. We show you the episodes that are also about our World Heritage region.
An extract from the podcast description:
"When you think of travelling, sandy beaches, blue seas, snow-capped mountains and other cultures tend to come to mind. However, travelling is not only interesting far away, but also on your doorstep. In this series, we would like to invite you to explore our home in the heart of Germany. To paraphrase Goethe, we don't want to wander far afield, but rather look for the good things nearby.
We chat to interesting people who tell us what you should definitely see in their neighbourhood. There's bound to be an insider tip or two. Be curious! Saxony-Anhalt is really beautiful, really green, really special and really just round the corner."

Listen to the episode on Podcast.de.
The guest in the sixth episode of the podcast ‘Saxony-Anhalt as a travel destination’ is Andreas Ohse, Chairman of the Central German Society for Industrial Heritage. As one of the most traditional industrial regions in Europe, today's Saxony-Anhalt has always been home to ground-breaking innovations, from the first colour film or the world's first synthetic fibre to the beginning of classical modernism in architecture. Exciting places can still be explored today on the Coal, Steam and Light Lakes Route. "Coordinator Anke Triller meets with the museum curator of the ifm and two contemporary witnesses in the former ORWO film factory in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park. Find out why and under what harsh conditions women were allowed to work in this chemical factory from as early as 1910. And why they were the first to be dismissed three times in the 20th century. Both contemporary witnesses describe their work ‘in the film’ in GDR times very personally and openly. You can also find out what is behind terms such as ‘Be-Gießerei’, “Muttibus” and ‘063’. Around 10 minutes of bonus material from the museum tour round off this episode on industrial history and women's gainful employment in the 20th century."

"With the abolition of three-class suffrage in 1918, not only women but also many men finally gained the right to vote and stand for election. The French Revolution is regarded as the starting signal on the way to gaining this civil right; later stages include the Prussian Landrecht as well as the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation and the 1848/49 Revolution.
After the political opportunities for women were initially severely restricted in the middle of the 19th century, a new structure of the women's movement was established, including charitable and educational organisations. Many pioneering women of this time acquired the tools for their later parliamentary and extra-parliamentary political careers. Well-known names such as Luise Otto-Peters, Luise Aston and Hedwig Dohm are mentioned, as is the women's rights activist Minna Cauer, who wanted a quota for women to be stipulated in the 1918 electoral law. The fact that the response of the then Secretary of State for the Interior had prophetic overtones and is highly topical today - over 100 years later - is thought-provoking to say the least.
From the newcomer in the Anhalt state parliament (Marie Kettmann, SPD in Dessau), the long-standing successful SPD state top candidate (Minna Bollmann from Halberstadt) to the highest proportion of women in the provincial state parliament in Merseburg at the time. Using the example of KPD delegate Ida Lehmann from Röblingen, historian and German scholar Uta Forner traces her development from working-class child to feisty politician in Halle. Today, a women's village in Lower Saxony also commemorates Minna Faßhauer (born near Egeln), who was the first female minister of education in the ‘Socialist Republic of Braunschweig’ to reform history lessons and the school system, as Elke Stolze emphasises.
This episode should motivate as many people as possible to exercise their right to vote as responsible citizens, because it was hard-won for everyone."

"As part of the Saxony-Anhalt Art Foundation's Heimatstipendium #2 contemporary art programme, 10 artists spent 12 months as guests in 10 museums and memorials. Special thanks go to Mareen Alburg Duncker and Petra Reichenbach from Halle, who enriched the two Nazi memorials in Bernburg and Prettin with their artistic approach to this topic! Here they both talk about the development process of their art projects, the results of which can now be seen on site during regular opening hours."

"At Easter 1523, a group of nuns fled from the Cistercian monastery in Nimbschen. One of them was to become the most famous woman of the 16th century - the noblewoman Katharina von Bora and later Lutheran. Women's Places Coordinator talks to Katja Köhler (Katharina Guest Guide and Head of Cultural Education at the Luther Memorials Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt) and - shortly before his retirement - its longstanding director and board member Dr Stefan Rhein about life in the convent and her escape, disruptions and achievements in Katharina's life. A plea by two experts for the married couple Katharina and Martin and definitely also for this Wittenberg Women's Place, which has been designated since 20 December 2000!"

"This episode takes Women's Places coordinator Anke Triller to the edge of the Düben Heath. Ernestine Christine Reiske, née Müller, was born here in Kemberg in 1735. The local all-day school has chosen her as its patron saint. Since then, entire year groups have been searching for traces of the life and work of this highly respected classical philologist, author, publisher and agricultural entrepreneur. Heike Beck, acting headmistress, and Carina Engelhardt, German and art teacher, explain how the school's commemoration is successful across all subjects and what values can be conveyed."

In this episode, the current kindergarten director, the mayor of Zörbig and the local museum director talk to the Women's Places Coordinator about everyday life at the kindergarten yesterday and today."

“The Women's Places Coordinator has been invited to the ”Haus der Fürstin" in Wörlitz together with the Dessau Equal Opportunities Officer. During a tour of the permanent exhibition “The whole country a garden”, she learns more about the former landlady Louise Henriette Wilhelmine von Anhalt-Dessau from Corinna Meyer, castellan of the Luisium, using relevant exhibits. Born a Prussian princess of Brandenburg-Schwedt, she was married to her cousin Leopold III Friedrich Franz von Anhalt-Dessau (better known as Prince Franz) in 1762 at the behest of the Prussian king. They had an unusual marriage. Although biased by tradition, but open to the bourgeois values of the Enlightenment, Princess Luise sought her own way of living."
