The long history of Annaburg began in the 13th century with the construction of a hunting lodge. Until the 16th century, this lodge and the subsequent town were called Lochau.
Frederick the Wise of Saxony, an important supporter of Martin Luther, died here in 1525. The small town of Annaburg owes its present name to the Saxon electress Anna, also known as “Mother Anna”. Today, Annaburg comprises several neighborhoods, some of which were settled as early as 1000 years ago. The castle of the same name and the imposing buildings and half-timbered houses along the market square are among the highlights of this city in the heath. We recommend the local history museum in the old town hall, the Annaburg Porcelain Museum and the "Samendarre," a place for the processing of seeds.
