Gothic House

The Gothic House is one of the earliest and best preserved neo-Gothic buildings on the European continent. Construction began in 1773, with several extensions added until 1813.

Initially, the Gothic House was to be an apartment for the court gardener, Schoch. From 1785, the later duke Franz had it expanded for his own use and for his personal collections. In contrast to the castle, which was open to the public, the owner could retreat here. Franz lived in his private residence with his gardener’s daughter Luise Schoch, who was married to him morganatically, and their three children.
