Wittenberger Reformationsfest

Tip 1 - Wittenberg Reformation Festival on October 31

At the Wittenberg Reformation Festival on October 31, Lutherstadt comes to life: From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., artisans, musicians, jugglers, and reenactors present a lively market spectacle at the original sites of the Reformation. Between the Renaissance Town Hall, the Castle Church, and the Old Town, history comes to life through music, art, light, and performance.

A highlight of the festival is the grand light parade starting at 5 p.m., which winds its way through the Old Town with lanterns, music, and historical costumes, ending on the Schlosswiese with music, punch, and an atmospheric finale. In addition, projects such as the Wittenberg Sound Theses bring Martin Luther’s 95 Theses into the present as acoustic installations at special locations.

The Historic Market Spectacle is free for visitors. Come experience how Wittenberg unites the past and the present in one festival.

By the way: As a World Heritage Card holder, you also receive free admission to the sites of the Reformation, such as the Castle Church, the City Church, the Augusteum (the Luther House is closed until 2027), and the Melanchthon House. At the Asisi Panorama, you can immerse yourself in the year 1517 with free admission.

Tip 2 - Fall Break Full of Discoveries

From October 19 to 30, 2026, it’s fall break in Saxony-Anhalt, and the World Heritage Region offers numerous activities for children and families during this time.

Whether it’s exciting hands-on activities, creative workshops, field trips, nature experiences, or special events—there’s no chance of getting bored during the break.

Take advantage of the fall break to discover new things together and get to know the World Heritage Region from a different perspective.

We’ll soon be presenting a detailed overview of what’s in store for you and your family in 2026 in a separate blog post.

Tip 3 - Discover the Variety of Museums in the Fall

When temperatures drop outside and the days grow shorter, October is the perfect time to visit a museum. The Anhalt-Dessau-Wittenberg World Heritage Region offers an impressive variety of attractions: from art and the Bauhaus to regional history and unique historical sites, there’s plenty to discover.

For example, visit the Anhalt Picture Gallery with its significant art collection, immerse yourself in the history of the world-famous design school at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau, or explore medieval legal history at the “Sachsenspiegel” open-air museum in Reppichau. The Bitterfeld District Museum and the Gröbzig Museum Synagogue also offer fascinating insights into the region’s history and culture. And these are by no means all the museums waiting for your visit.

Especially appealing for explorers: With the World Heritage Card, you’ll receive free admission to around 60 museums and exhibitions in the Anhalt-Dessau-Wittenberg World Heritage Region. This way, you can tailor your fall day entirely to your interests while getting to know the region’s numerous cultural treasures.

Ferropolis, Gräfenhainichen

Tip 4 - Discover Industrial Heritage: Following the Traces of Coal, Technology, and Change

Fall is a great time to discover the industrial heritage of the World Heritage Region. Between Wittenberg, Dessau, and Bitterfeld, you’ll find numerous examples of industrial history, ranging from former power plants and company towns to landscapes shaped by open-pit mining and impressive large-scale machinery.

For example, visit the Hugo Junkers Technical Museum in Dessau, learn more about the history of film production at the Wolfen Industry and Film Museum, or marvel at the giant machines in Ferropolis—the city of iron. The Piesteritz factory town, the Bitterfeld Water Center, and the Zschornewitz factory town also tell fascinating stories about work, technology, and life in the industrial region.

The region’s transformation can be experienced in a particularly impressive way along the COAL | STEAM | LIGHT | LAKES adventure route. Spanning more than 160 kilometers, the route connects historic sites of industrial history with today’s lakes and recreational landscapes that emerged from the former mining areas.

Our tip: Plan a trip to Ferropolis or Bitterfeld-Wolfen in October and combine industrial culture with an autumn bike ride or a walk along the water. With the WelterbeCard, you can also save money at many industrial heritage sites.
