Guided by the European idea, the European Ramblers’ Association (ERA, founded in 1969) set out to create a cross-border European network of long-distance paths meant to connect people. Today, the ERA is an umbrella organization of national hiking associations representing 5 million hikers in 55 member organizations from 28 European countries.

The European long-distance paths offer a possibility of getting to know European regions directly and intensively by hiking.

The E11 path is a west-east connection that leads from The Hague in the Netherlands to the Polish-Belarusian border near Augustów. Plans to continue the route to Lithuania and Russia exist, but are on hold. The E11 leads mostly through lowlands and is thus also suitable for cyclists. Little wonder, then, that sections of the E11 coincide with bike paths.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the path begins at the northern edge of the Harz Mountains and runs through the towns of Bad Harzburg, Thale and Ballenstedt to Halle an der Saale. Hikers traverse our World Heritage Region on a northerly course past the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Dessau-Roßlau and Wörlitz. Passing the Biosphere Reserve Middle Elbe, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, hikers reach the Fläming Nature Park and Brandenburg.
