Book village Mühlbeck
On the western edge of Düben Heath, near Lake Goitzsche, the neighboring villages of Friedersdorf and Mühlbeck joined forces in 1997 to become Germany’s first book village. The world’s original book village in Hay-on-Wye, Wales, served as a model for this accumulation of printed matter.
Statistically, there are hundreds of books per inhabitant of the two villages – probably a German record. Here, antiquarian bookshops offer collectors and book lovers practically everything ever printed on paper: novels, reference books, works of non-fiction, postcards, curiosities. Discoveries range from inexpensive paperbacks to valuable rarities, and there are lots of specialized stores.
