Luther's protector
Image
Patron and protector of Martin Luther. Frederick III, Elector of Saxony, was a friend and supporter of Luther, especially on a political level. He granted him protection and free passage to the Diet in Worms and accommodation at Wartburg Castle near Eisenach. His pacifist attitude and his resolute refusal to resolve conflicts in a warlike manner earned him the nickname "the Wise".
In 1502 he founded the university in Wittenberg, where Martin Luther also taught. The Reformation originated in a different place there.
