Historical inn “Zum Eichenkranz”

The fame of the English garden at Wörlitz attracted increasingly more visitors, and in the mid-1780s, nobles, scholars and artists flocked to the small principality of Anhalt-Dessau.
In order to give his guests greater freedom and convenience, Leopold Friedrich Franz commissioned a guesthouse. It opened in 1787 under the name “Zum Eichenkranz” and also served as the gateway to the park town of Wörlitz. The “Eichenkranz” became a place to stay, a meeting place to debate and philosophize, and a starting point for explorations of the beauties of Wörlitz Park.

The Society of Friends of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom (Gesellschaft der Freunde des Dessau-Wörlitzer Gartenreiches e. V.) took on the building and, with the help of subsidies and donations, almost completely renovated it in a manner befitting a historic monument. In 2014, the exterior works ended. The restoration of the valuable canvas wallpaper and of the stucco work inside concluded in 2016. Today, guided tours explain the building, its exhibition on the history of garden art, and the oldest restored canvas wallpapers.
