Plötzkau Castle
Built on the far eastern tip of a rocky outcrop, Plötzkau Castle impressively dominates the Saale floodplain. Even 900 years ago, this place was already the site of a castle fought over by the House of Welf and the Ascanians. Famous names such as those of Konrad ("Sassenblome"), the Margrave of the Northern March (Nordmark), and Albrecht the Bear are associated with its history.
Rebuilt from 1566 to 1573 in Renaissance style, the castle became a landmark, as its characteristic gables are visible from afar.
When Plötzkau became the sovereign principality of Anhalt-Plötzkau in 1611, the castle experienced its heyday. The principality itself was one of the smallest in Germany.
Today, the castle houses exhibitions on the crusaders and on 7,000 years of agriculture, boasting agricultural vehicles from the GDR and many regional excavation finds.
