The Red Tower is a great orientation point for visitors on the way to nearby Pouch Castle. The few remnants of a fortress remind visitors that this was a fortified place back in the 10th century. As it lost its former military significance, the fortress slowly morphed into a residential castle.
The present castle dates back to the 18th century. It belonged to Count Solms until the land reform of 1945 and then served as a retirement and nursing home until 1995. The Expo exhibition “Gaining land” (Land gewinnen) had revived the old walls for a while, but since then, they are again exposed to decay and destruction.
