The Saale is one of the most romantic rivers in Germany. Covering 403 km, this path (a part of the D 11 route) leads from the source of the Saale in the Fichtel Mountains (Fichtelgebirge) to where the river runs into the Elbe near Barby. Get enchanted by magnificent castles, palaces, a relaxing proximity to nature, lush green vineyards and historical sites.
Near its end, the bike route follows the river through the species-rich floodplain forest between Plötzkau and Bernburg to what once was the residence of the former duchy of Anhalt-Bernburg. Here, a picturesque castle, sometimes called "Anhalt’s crown", the historic town between mountain and valley, the Romanesque village church St. Stephen in the Waldau district and the fairy-tale garden "Paradies" with its park railroad make forexciting stops. Those who still have energy left after visiting the many sights can discover the Saale itself on the passenger ship MS Saalefee.
The former residential castle of the princes and later dukes of Anhalt-Bernburg rises on a high sandstone rock on the eastern bank of the Saale. A “civitas brandanburg” was first mentioned in a deed of gift from Otto I dated July 29, 961.
Built on the far eastern tip of a rocky outcrop, Plötzkau Castle impressively dominates the Saale floodplain. Even 900 years ago, this place was already the site of a castle fought over by the House of Welf and the Ascanians.
