10 Fall Highlights in the World Heritage Region
Colorful forests, historic parks, fascinating museums, and leisurely walks: As the leaves slowly change color, the Anhalt-Dessau-Wittenberg World Heritage Region reveals its most atmospheric side.
Fall is the perfect season to explore the region on foot or by bike. The summer heat is over, nature glows in warm colors, and many attractions can now be explored at a leisurely pace.
We’ve put together a list of 10 fall highlights that you shouldn’t miss this season.

Tip 1 - Take a stroll through the colorful Wörlitz Park
There’s hardly a better place in the World Heritage Region for an autumn stroll than Wörlitz Park. When the leaves on the trees turn yellow, orange, and red, the landscape park transforms into a vibrant, colorful backdrop.
Winding paths lead past lakes, canals, bridges, and historic structures. New views of the landscape open up at every turn. Especially in the fall, it’s worth strolling through the park without a specific destination in mind and simply soaking in the special atmosphere.
Wörlitz Park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz” and is one of the seven historic parks and gardens of the Garden Kingdom.
Our tip: Take your time and plan to spend several hours on your walk. The park is especially beautiful in the morning or late afternoon, when the warm autumn light filters through the trees. With the World Heritage Card, you can also take advantage of free offers.
Tip 2 - Enjoy Autumnal Views in the Garden Kingdom
The Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm isn’t just made up of Wörlitz Park. The other historic gardens also invite you to go on discovery tours in the fall.
How about, for example, a stroll through the Luisium, a walk around the Georgium, or a visit to Kühnauer Park? Everywhere you go, you’ll encounter historic buildings, old trees, and lovingly landscaped gardens.
What makes it special: Each park has its own unique character. That way, you can discover new spots with every visit.
Our tip: Combine several Garden Kingdom sites into one itinerary and explore part of the route by bike.

Tip 3 - Tranquil Nature in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve
If you’re looking to get out into nature this fall, you’ll find a truly unique landscape along the Elbe River. The Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve protects one of the last large, contiguous floodplain landscapes in Central Europe and provides a habitat for numerous animals and plants.
In the fall, the floodplain landscape changes almost daily. Trees take on vibrant colors, morning fog blankets the meadows, and new vistas keep emerging along the Elbe.
A good starting point for a visit is the Auenhaus Information Center between Dessau and Oranienbaum. There, you can learn more about the unique features of the Elbe floodplains. Among other things, the exhibition showcases the habitat of the European beaver and the work of the biosphere reserve.
Afterward, it’s best to head out into nature.
Our tip: Bring a pair of binoculars. With a little luck, you’ll be able to spot various birds and other inhabitants of the protected area while taking a walk through the floodplains.

Tip 4 - Discover the Bauhaus and the Masters' Houses
cIs fall weather the perfect time to visit a museum? Not necessarily! Even when the sun is shining, a visit to the Bauhaus in Dessau is well worth it.
The Bauhaus building and the Masters’ Houses have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and tell the story of one of the most influential schools of art, design, and architecture of the 20th century. Between 1925 and 1932, the Bauhaus in Dessau experienced its most important phase of development.
In 2026, there will be a special occasion to mark this: the Bauhaus building was constructed in Dessau 100 years ago, and the city will celebrate the anniversary with numerous events.
After visiting the Bauhaus building, the tour continues to the Masters’ Houses. Artists such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Lyonel Feininger, among others, lived and worked here.
Our tip: Combine your visit with a stroll through Dessau. This way, you can experience modern architecture and the city’s autumnal scenery together. And with the World Heritage Card, you’ll save a lot of money.

Tip 5 - Reformation Festival in Lutherstadt Wittenberg
October 31 is a very special day in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Here, the Reformation Festival commemorates the events that made Luther and the city world-famous.
On Reformation Day, the historic old town becomes a gathering place for visitors. In 2026, the Reformation Festival, featuring a historic market spectacle, will take place again on October 31. There will also be festive concerts in the Castle Church and the City Church.
Around the market square, the Castle Church, and the historic streets, you can experience history in a particularly vivid way. After all, the Castle Church is home to the Thesis Door, which commemorates Martin Luther’s 95 Theses and the beginning of the Reformation.
Our tip: Plan enough time for your visit to explore the historic sites of the Old Town in addition to the festival, and save money with the World Heritage Card.

Tip 6 - Oranienbaum Castle and Park in the Fall
A piece of Holland in the heart of Anhalt: Oranienbaum Palace and Park are among the most extraordinary sites in the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz.
Construction of the palace complex began in 1683 as a summer residence for Henriette Catharina, the wife of Prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt-Dessau. The princess’s Dutch roots are still reflected today in the architecture and design.
In the fall, a stroll through the sprawling park is especially worthwhile. Baroque garden areas, the orangery, and unusual features such as the Chinese House create a varied backdrop.
This once again highlights just how different the individual sites of the Garden Kingdom are: While Wörlitz is characterized by expansive landscaping, Oranienbaum has a distinctly more geometric and Baroque feel.
Our tip: Take your time on a tour of the palace and park and discover the many small details of the grounds.

Tip 7 - An Autumn Walk Through Bernburg
Bernburg an der Saale is also a lovely destination for a day trip in the fall. The historic old town, the Saale River, and the imposing Bernburg Castle can be wonderfully combined into one outing.
A stroll through the old town leads up to the castle (which houses a museum), which towers over the Saale and is visible from afar. From here, you’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the Saale Valley. Afterward, head back down to the river, where you can enjoy the autumnal scenery on a walk along the Saale.
The narrow alleys and historic buildings of the old town also invite you to explore Bernburg at your own pace. When the first leaves fall and the sun sits lower in the sky, the town takes on a very special atmosphere.
Our tip: Combine your stroll through the old town with a visit to Bernburg Castle and a walk along the Saale River. That way, you can experience history, culture, and the autumn scenery all in one day.

Tip 8 - Discover Industrial History at the IFM Wolfen
Fall outings don’t always have to take you through parks and forests. At the Wolfen Industry and Film Museum, you can immerse yourself in the history of a place that has shaped the film industry worldwide.
In 1936, the first practical color film was produced at the former Wolfen Film Factory using the Agfacolor process. Today, the Industry and Film Museum commemorates the history of film production and the people who worked here.
The historic production facility is particularly fascinating: machines, workstations, and production processes give visitors a sense of how photographic film used to be made. This makes the museum appealing not only to technology and photography enthusiasts but also to anyone interested in learning more about the region’s industrial history.
That’s why the IFM Wolfen is an ideal destination, especially on a cool or rainy fall day. And if you’d like to enjoy some fresh fall air afterward, you can combine your museum visit with a detour to the Goitzsche.
Our tip: Allow plenty of time for the museum and follow up your visit with a walk along the Goitzsche. That way, you can experience both industrial history and the modern lake landscape of Bitterfeld-Wolfen in a single day. And save money with the WelterbeCard.

Tip 9 - Following in the Footsteps of Hugo Junkers
When the autumn rain sets in outside, a visit to the Hugo Junkers Museum of Technology is a great opportunity to go on a journey of discovery anyway.
The museum is located at the historic Junkers Airfield in Dessau and is dedicated to the life and work of aircraft designer and engineer Hugo Junkers.
Among the highlights are the restored Junkers Ju 52/3m, the historic wind tunnel, and a replica of the Junkers F 13, the world’s first all-metal passenger aircraft. Junkers’ innovations in other fields, including stoves and household appliances, are also featured in the exhibition.
There are also flight simulators for tech enthusiasts of all ages.
Our tip: A visit to the museum is perfect for bad weather and, when the weather is nicer, can be combined with a tour of Dessau.
Tip 10 - A Taste of the Tropics at Alaris Butterfly Park
It’s cool outside, and the leaves are falling from the trees. Inside, however, the climate is tropical. At the Alaris Butterfly Park in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, you can escape autumn for a while.
Spanning about 1,000 square meters, a tropical landscape awaits you, home to more than 140 different species of butterflies. The butterflies fly freely throughout the park, allowing you to observe them up close. With a little luck, you might even witness a butterfly hatching.
The butterfly park is a wonderful fall destination, especially for families. But adults can also spend some time here discovering the different species and colors.
Our tip: Don’t plan too short a visit. There’s an amazing amount to see in the warm tropical landscape.
